It is with great pleasure that Grand River Health in Rifle announces the addition of Dr. Peter Zonakis, M.D., F.A.C.S. to Grand River’s expanding medical Team. Dr. Zonakis is an Otolaryngologist, specializing in Ear, Nose, and Throat care and surgery.
Dr. Zonakis received his medical degree in 1975 from Indiana University School of Medicine in Indianapolis, Indiana. He later completed his Otolaryngology residency at Wayne State University School of Medicine in Detroit, Michigan in 1980. Most recently Dr. Zonakis practiced at Payson Regional Medical Center in Payson Arizona, where he also served as the Chairman of the Surgery Department and was the Consulting Physician for the Arizona Medical Board for Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery.
“An Ear, Nose and Throat Specialist came up as one of the most requested needed services from both the community and our medical providers. We are very fortunate to have found such an experienced and highly regarded Otolaryngologist such as Dr. Zonakis to join us at Grand River Health” says Lois Kame, Grand River’s Director of Clinic Services.
Dr. Zonakis and his wife Barb have recently relocated to the Rifle area. In their free time they enjoy cross country skiing and golf, plus hiking with their two Border Collies, Cody and Zorro.
When we asked Dr. Zonakis why he chose Grand River Health and the Rifle area, he responded “Obviously, I was attracted the scenery, climate and the outdoor activities, that was easy. But a hospital like Grand River is rare. Quality and patient care are a really priority here, not just a slogan, everyone here is committed to it. There are very few places left that truly honor their mission like they do here. I am excited to be a part of the Grand River team.”
Dr. Zonakis will begin seeing patients at Grand River Hospital and Medical Center this month. To make an appointment, please call 625-1100.

National Nutrition Month
Today kicks off National Nutrition Month, which calls attention to the importance of making informed food choices and developing sound eating and physical activity habits every March. This year is “Eat Right, Your Way, Every Day,” which encourages personalized healthy eating styles and recognizes that food preferences, lifestyle, cultural and ethnic traditions and health concerns all impact individual food choices.
Tip of the Day!!
The key to keeping food costs low when grocery shopping is to have a plan before you hit the store. Take an inventory of what you have on hand and what you’ll need and make a shopping list to avoid impulse purchases or costly mistakes.
Other ways to reduce cost and control portions and quality are:
• Don’t shop when you’re hungry. If you do, you’re more likely to make impulse purchases on less nutritious items that cost more.
• Check for supermarket specials in the newspaper and online and plan your meals around what’s on sale.
• Buy cheaper meat cuts such as the beef round.
• Buy whole chickens to cut up into batches to cook, dividing them into servings and saving the leftovers in the refrigerator or freezer for future meals.
• Buy fruits and vegetables that are in season and locally grown.
• Buying frozen or canned foods can sometimes save even more than buying fresh produce since there isn’t the chance of having to throw out rotted fresh produce.
• Buy store brands, sometimes called private label, instead of their name brand counterparts, to save you money. Store brands are nutritionally equivalent to the name brand items.

March 1, 2013, Rifle, Colo.: It is with great pleasure that Grand River Health in Rifle announces the addition of Dr. Mary J. Glode, M.D., FACOG to Grand River’s expanding Women’s Health team.
Dr. Glode has built a strong, local reputation for her compassion, experience, and dedication to women’s wellness. She received her medical degree in 1997 from Creighton University School of Medicine in Omaha, Nebraska. She later completed her OB-GYN Residency at the University Of Missouri-Kansas City, Missouri. In 2001, Dr. Glode began her practice with Women’s Health Associates in Glenwood Springs, where she offered a full scope of OB/GYN services.
“Dr. Glode brings another dimension in the scope and growth of our Women’s Health services. We are elated that she has decided to make Grand River Health her new home” says Dr. Gary Meyer, D.O., Grand River Health’s Medical Director.
Dr. Glode currently lives in Glenwood Springs with her husband, Dr. Kelly Glenn, and their two dogs, a St. Bernard named Hank and Mastiff named Lila. In her free time, she enjoys hiking travelling and reading.
When asked what she loves most about practicing medicine in this area she responds “I love being involved in taking care of women through all phases of their lives. I love the personal connections I make with my patients and their families. My passions are women’s wellness, bioidentical hormone therapy and gynecological surgery. It’s an excellent blend of primary care for women, office work with surgical and hospital work.”

“We are very excited about Dr. Glode’s decision to bring her practice to Grand River Health. Her experience and knowledge in the field of Women’s Health is a monumental benefit for both our current and future patients, and will provide even more access for superior women’s health care.” says Lois Kame, Grand River’s Director of Clinic Services.

When asked why she has chosen to practice at Grand River Health in Rifle Dr. Glode says, “I decided to focus my practice on GYN only. I wanted to stay local and continue the relationships I have built over the years with my patients and colleagues. Grand River is doing some amazing things! They are constantly investing in cutting edge technology and they are dedicated to expanding their services to meet the needs of the community. Grand River is a top-notch facility. Number one, though, are the people-everyone has been so welcoming. The focus on quality and personal care is exactly what I was looking for. Taking care of each patient, as a person first, with a home town feel is exactly what I want for my patients and for myself.”

Dr. Glode will begin seeing patients at Grand River Hospital and Medical Center on Monday, March 11 and will offer full scope gynecology including surgical and hormonal services. To make an appointment, please call 625-1100.

January 2, 2013, Rifle, Colo: Grand River Hospital District is proud to announce the return of Dr. Dan Smith, DO, to family practice at Grand River Primary Care in Rifle. Dr. Smith previously practiced in Rifle for Grand River from 1994 through 2002. In 2002, he left the Rifle area for Wisconsin to be closer to family. For the past 8 years, he has been practicing family medicine and urgent care for the Affinity Medical Group in Kaukauna, Wisconsin. The Smiths’ love for Western Colorado never left though, as Dr. Smith, his wife Diane, and three sons continued to visit and vacation on the Western Slope on an almost annual basis since their departure.
“Even though we have been gone for almost 10 years, we continue to have close ties here and have kept in touch with many of our old friends and colleagues. My family loves the outdoors. The mountain biking and skiing here in the Western Colorado just can’t be beat!” says Smith.

“We are very excited to welcome Dr. Smith back to Grand River Primary Care” says Lois Kame, Director of Clinic Services, for Grand River Hospital District. “The buzz that Dr. Smith is back in Rifle has spread quickly throughout the community.” adds Kame.

When asked why Dr. Smith decided to return to Grand River, he responded “I feel privileged to be able to come back to this area and work with the great team at Grand River. I am looking forward to returning to my passion of providing healthcare in a rural setting and being an active member of the community.”

Dr. Smith will begin seeing patients on January 14th in the Primary Care Clinic in Rifle. Call 625-1100 to make an appointment.
