POSITION TITLE: Post- Anesthesia Care Unit Staff Nurse (PACU RN)
DEPARTMENT: Perioperative Services
REPORTS TO: Perioperative Services Nurse Manager
BASIC FUNCTION: The PACU Registered Nurse is responsible to the Perioperative Services Nurse Manager, and provides care, treatment, counseling, and health education to patients in the surgical environment. The RN assists in the monitoring patient’s physiologic and emotional status in the immediate postoperative environment. Communicates with surgeon and anesthesiologist and other members of the health care team about patient conditions and intercedes to maintain optimal homeostasis.
QUALIFICATIONS: Education: Graduation from an accredited school of Nursing. Valid registration as a Registered Nurse in the State of Colorado. A temporary permit issued by the Board of Nursing will be accepted until a permanent license is received if awaiting reciprocity. Must have current BLS card. ACLS card is required within 6 months of initial employment. Both cards must maintain current status throughout GRHD employment. Experience: Prefer one year of professional nursing experience in a PACU or ICU patient care setting.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of professional nursing theory and practice and ability to give and evaluate patient care. Knowledge of District policies, regulations and procedures to administer patient care. Knowledge of medical equipment and instruments to administer patient care. Skill in identifying problems and recommending solutions. Skill in preparing and maintaining records, both written and on computer, and responding to correspondence. Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with patients, medical staff, co-workers and the public. Ability to maintain performance improvement and quality control standards. Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations. Ability to communicate clearly.

WORKING CONDITIONS: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is exposed to weather conditions prevalent at the time. This position performs tasks that involve Category I exposure to blood borne pathogens, body fluids or tissues. Exposure to patients’ conditions and some unpleasant sights, smells and diseases are common. Frequent exposure to chemical hazards and may encounter radiation hazards. May experience traumatic situations including psychiatric, dismembered and deceased patients.

- Professional Leadership: Plans, organizes, implements, directs, and evaluates nursing care for a group of postoperative patients. Supervises the work of the LPN, CNA, and OR coordinator as appropriate. Plans for personal growth and development. Supervises orientation of and serves as a mentor to new Perioperative Services staff.
- Clinical Outcomes Achievement: Utilizes the nursing process to assess patient care needs and to implement, evaluate, and revise the patient’s PACU plan of care.
- Patient/ Customer Satisfaction: Assesses and develops approaches to enhance areas of satisfaction and remedy dissatisfaction for patients, families, employees, and health care providers.
- Financial Health: Utilizes human and material resources efficiently and ensures that equipment is maintained in good repair.
Community Involvement: Participates in community events related to health-care and GRHD’s mission.
